The Source Code FE team is focused on GitLab's suite of tools around Source Code Management. We interface with Code Review team often as well as the wider Frontend teams in shared initiatives. We work very closely with stable counterparts including the Source Code backend team, product management, product design, testing, security, UX research and technical writing. The Source Code team is focused on building and supporting all use cases related to interacting with the code stored in each project repository. Whether it's a quick consultation of a commit or a deep analysis of the history of changes to any given file, our team is tasked with building and supporting features that enable a great experience. Source Code is one of the oldest and most complex parts of the GitLab application. We leverage information provided by the backend (who interfaces with the Git repositories via Gitaly) to surface all the necessary information to the user via the web browser. We see this as an essential part of collaborating since it’s the way to quickly extract information and share it across peers when collaborating or discussing a specific part of the codebase. A large portion of GitLab traffic, whether on gitlab.com or in private instances, happens through Source Code pages, and we are focused on providing a great and performant experience through performance tuning, optimizing data loading and display, including dynamic and interactive web applications. You can find more details about our roadmap here: Direction - Source Code Management Some examples of our projects: Render Blame file information within the Blob viewer frontend app [MVC] Branch Rules Editing Refactor Repository Browser to 1 Vue Application Highlight source code syntax on the frontend using HighlightJS What You’ll Do Develop features and improvements to the GitLab product in a secure, well-tested, and performant way You’ll work with Product Management and other stakeholders (Backend, UX, etc.) to iterate on new features within the GitLab product. Craft code that meets our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices for a high-scale web environment. Maintain and advocate for these standards through code review. Consistently ship small features and improvements with minimal guidance and support from other team members. Collaborate with the team on larger projects. You’ll help improve the overall experience of our product through improving the quality of the Frontend features both in your group and features that benefit other groups. You’ll help identify areas of improvements in the code base, both specific to your group and outside your group (eg. component library) and help contribute to make it better You’ll learn, collaborate and teach other Frontend Engineers. Everyone can contribute something new to the team regardless of how long they’ve been in the industry. You’ll fix prioritized issues from the issue tracker. These are typically bugs listed in a GitLab issue with an attached severity and priority label. You’ll contribute to and follow our workflow process, alongside the rest of the Frontend Engineers and the GitLab community as a whole. What You’ll Bring Professional experience with VueJS or another modern JavaScript web framework (React, Angular, Ember, etc) Experience with writing automated tests (eg. Jest, Karma, Jasmine, Mocha, AVA, tape) Experience using Git in a professional/workplace environment A solid understanding in core web and browser concepts (eg. how the browser parses and constructs a web page) A solid understanding of semantic HTML, CSS, and core JavaScript concepts. Proficiency in the English language, both written and verbal, sufficient for success in a remote and largely asynchronous work environment Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and/or organizational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems Comfort working in a highly agile, intensely iterative software development process Demonstrated ability to onboard and integrate with an organization long-term Positive and solution-oriented mindset Effective communication skills: Regularly achieve consensus with peers, and clear status updates An inclination towards communication, inclusion, and visibility Self-motivated and self-managing, with great organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to work closely with other parts of the organization Share our values, and work in accordance with those values Ability to thrive in a fully remote organization Ability to use GitLab Comfort and familiarity with our code review process About the team You’ll be joining a team of 2 frontend engineers located in EMEA and collaborate closely with 3 other frontend engineers in the sibling team of Create:Code Review Frontend (same manager). Here you will have the opportunity to work on one of the most impactful and used products at GitLab. You’ll become an expert in high-traffic frontend development revolving around our Repository tooling as well as collaborate in cross-team features like Diffs and Approval Rules. The team works very closely with the Create:Source Code Backend team and collaborate developing GraphQL queries and mutations to implement our features. As expected in one of the oldest parts of our codebase, we operate amidst legacy code that we refactor to more modern practices frequently. The team follows the Product Development Flow for new features. The team works async with strong mutual support from all team members. We leverage 2 Principal engineers in Create and 1 Staff Fullstack engineer in the sibling Create:Code Review team. How GitLab will support you Benefits to support your health, finances, and well-being All remote, asynchronous work environment Flexible Paid Time Off Team Member Resource Groups Equity Compensation & Employee Stock Purchase Plan Growth and development budget Parental leave Home office support Please note that we welcome interest from candidates with varying levels of experience; many successful candidates do not meet every single requirement. Additionally, studies have shown that people from underrepresented groups are less likely to apply to a job unless they meet every single qualification. If you're excited about this role, please apply and allow our recruiters to assess your application.
