Trust & Safety Engineer

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Trust & Safety Product Team. In this fully remote role, you will design and implement features that safeguard the Wikimedia community from abuse, harassment, vandalism, and harmful content. Collaborating with a global, interdisciplinary team, you'll contribute to open source projects serving over a billion users, and help maintain the integrity and safety of the world's largest free knowledge platform.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and deploy new features and improvements for safety and moderation tools.
• Create multilingual, accessible, and performant user interfaces using PHP, JavaScript, VueJS, and CSS.
• Document code contributions and technical features for internal and community use.
• Collaborate with administrators, security, legal, and community teams to ensure privacy, compliance, and abuse mitigation.
• Review code, refactor legacy systems, and provide technical support to volunteers and staff.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in software engineering, including backend and frontend development.
• Proficiency with object-oriented programming using scripting languages (PHP, JavaScript, Python, or Ruby).
• Experience with unit and integration testing, secure coding, and performance optimization.
• Strong written communication skills for online, asynchronous collaboration.
• Ability to work independently in a remote, globally distributed environment.
