Advocacy Researcher Risk Management Security Technical Writing

The Center for AI Risk Management & Alignment (CARMA) seeks a Public Security Policy Researcher to advance our AI governance, risk mitigation, and emergency response frameworks. This full-time, remote role involves disaster preparedness planning for AI-related crises across multiple jurisdictions, vulnerability assessments of critical societal systems, and developing robust governance approaches. You will directly engage with AI safety challenges, shape policy responses to emerging risks, and help build resilience against the potential impacts of advanced AI systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-depth policy research to map current and proposed AI governance frameworks and identify gaps.
  • Assess vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure, physical safety, information ecosystems, and social institutions caused by advanced AI systems.
  • Develop adaptable AI disaster scenario plans for various jurisdictional and governance contexts.
  • Translate complex technical concepts and risk scenarios into actionable policy recommendations for decision-makers.
  • Draft policy briefs, reports, and blog posts to communicate AI governance challenges to diverse audiences.
  • Create simulation materials and tabletop exercises to stress-test emergency response protocols for AI system failures.
  • Identify early warning indicators and potential cascade failures in AI governance structures.
  • Map institutional dependencies and coordination challenges in cross-jurisdictional disaster response.
  • Analyze civil defense and disaster response frameworks for adaptability to novel AI threats.
  • Support advocacy initiatives and strategic relationship building with policymakers.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Public Policy, Administration, Political Science, International Relations, Science and Technology Studies, or related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven ability to conduct thorough policy analysis and produce high-quality written outputs for academic and policy audiences.
  • Exceptional writing skills, with experience translating complex technical concepts for non-specialists.
  • Strong grasp of policy processes and strategic approaches to policy change.
  • Broad literacy across sciences and physical technologies.
  • Working knowledge of international relations and governance structures for emerging technology management.
  • Understanding of AI safety, systemic risks, and sociotechnical implications of advanced AI systems.
  • Self-directed with ability to manage complex projects remotely and maintain attention to detail.
  • Preferred: Experience in crisis response planning, disaster preparedness, or emergency management.
  • Preferred: Background in cybersecurity, biosecurity, critical infrastructure protection, or vulnerability assessments.
