Canonical is seeking an experienced Lead Linux Kernel Engineer to guide the architecture, development, and delivery of the Ubuntu Linux kernel. As a technical leader, you will collaborate globally with top talent, optimize kernel performance, enhance security, and drive innovation for enterprise, cloud, and silicon partners. Job Overview

Lead critical kernel development initiatives for Ubuntu Linux, supporting breakthrough projects in AI, cloud, IoT, and enterprise environments.
Work closely with global teams and external partners to deliver robust, secure, and high-performing kernel solutions.
Collaborate in a remote-first, globally distributed team, with opportunities for travel and professional growth.

Key Responsibilities

Drive engagements with silicon and cloud partners to optimize kernel solutions for their platforms.
Lead mitigation of vulnerabilities, kernel hardening, and security improvements for Ubuntu Linux.
Architect and implement performance enhancements to achieve reliability and high performance.
Streamline packaging and distribution of third-party components for end user experience.
Coordinate delivery of kernel updates at scale, meeting strict quality and schedule requirements.
Guide and mentor junior and mid-career engineers, fostering team collaboration and excellence.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Expertise in C programming and *nix-based operating system kernels.
Strong background in kernel patching, debugging, and device drivers.
Experience with Python and Bash scripting.
Proficiency with git version control system.
Knowledge of software packaging formats (Debian, Snap, etc.).
Prior experience with Rust, especially for Linux kernel development.
Real-time operating systems (RTOS) and performance analysis skills.
Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
Ability to thrive in a remote, distributed work environment.
Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events.
