Linux Sustaining Engineer Role

Job Overview

As a Sustaining Engineer, you will troubleshoot, resolve, and drive upstream fixes for software challenges on Ubuntu and related open-source technologies. You will partner with internal teams and upstream communities to deliver robust solutions, enhance product stability, and maintain Canonical’s high standards of technical excellence in a distributed, global environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot and resolve complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open source software.
• Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and collaborate with upstream communities for inclusion.
• Maintain close working relationships with Field, Support, and Product Engineering teams.
• Participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Professional experience as a software engineer with a background in Computer Science, STEM, or similar fields.
• Strong expertise in Linux and at least one of Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, or other cloud technologies.
• Development-level experience in Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux platforms.
• Proficiency with debugging tools such as gdb and familiarity with git source code repositories.
• Exceptional academic track record, strong communication skills, and willingness to travel internationally up to 10%.
