Trust & Safety Engineer

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Trust & Safety Product Team. In this remote role, you will develop tools and features that protect Wikimedia’s global communities from abuse, harassment, and harmful content. You will collaborate in a diverse, consensus-driven team environment while building open source solutions that serve over a billion users worldwide. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and deploy new features and improvements for Trust & Safety systems and tools.
• Build multilingual, accessible, and performant user interfaces using PHP, JavaScript, VueJS, and CSS.
• Document technical contributions and feature updates in official documentation.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including security, legal, and community members, to address privacy, abuse mitigation, and legal compliance.
• Support abuse investigations, identify incident sources, and propose solutions to reduce their impact.
• Contribute to code reviews, refactor legacy systems, and proactively reduce technical debt.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional or volunteer software engineering experience, with emphasis on backend and frontend development.
• Proficiency in object-oriented scripting languages, especially PHP and JavaScript.
• Experience converting design mockups into accessible, performant components.
• Strong focus on writing unit and integration tests, and addressing security/code review feedback.
• Excellent written communication skills for remote, asynchronous collaboration.
• Ability to work with legacy codebases and learn from documentation.
• Experience with privacy, security, content moderation, or legal compliance in technical projects is a plus.
• Empathy for users and sensitivity to Trust & Safety challenges.
• Experience with MediaWiki or Wikimedia projects is a strong asset.
