The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking an experienced Communications Manager to lead and oversee communications for legal, advocacy, public policy, and other strategic initiatives that advance and protect the reputation of the Foundation, Wikipedia, and the global Wikimedia community. As a vital member of the Media Relations team, you will drive impactful media campaigns, manage crisis communications, and cultivate relationships with key journalists. This is a remote-first role, collaborating with diverse teams and stakeholders across multiple time zones, focused on delivering high-quality, global communications strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead proactive communications and media relations across a broad portfolio, aligning with Foundation goals.
  • Serve as primary contact for Global Advocacy and Legal Affairs teams and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Develop and implement strategic communications plans with clear, measurable objectives.
  • Craft, review, and ensure consistency in messaging and narratives for public audiences.
  • Manage crisis communications, develop rapid response plans, and handle sensitive media scenarios.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets globally.
  • Produce and review diverse communications materials, including press releases, blogs, and briefing documents.
  • Manage, coach, and provide feedback to direct reports, supporting team development.
  • Oversee external vendor relationships to ensure delivery of communications goals.
  • Support the implementation of workflows and systems to enhance media response capabilities.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Minimum 8 years of communications and media relations experience, with a focus on advocacy, policy, and legal communications.
  • Demonstrated expertise in crisis and rapid response communications.
  • Strong global media landscape knowledge with proven ability to build journalist relationships.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; attention to detail.
  • Experience advising and collaborating with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate complex topics into compelling public narratives.
  • People management experience, with proven track record of coaching and team development.
  • Experience managing external agencies or vendors.
  • Ability to work flexibly across time zones and autonomously in a fast-paced, remote environment.
