Mechanical CAD Designer II

AMERICAN SYSTEMS is seeking a self-driven Mechanical CAD Designer / Drafter II to join our Engineering Services Directorate in Norwich, CT. You will contribute to critical United States Nuclear Submarine Non-Propulsion Electronic System (NPES) projects, supporting design, drafting, and installation efforts. This role offers the opportunity to work hands-on aboard submarines, collaborate with diverse teams, and mentor junior staff while leveraging advanced CAD technologies.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct ship checks aboard various submarine classes (SSN 688/688I, SEAWOLF, VIRGINIA, OHIO).
• Research and interpret submarine construction drawings using ATIS System.
• Create and optimize 3D solid models and 2D installation & arrangement drawings in accordance with military specifications.
• Apply standard GD&T practices as per ASME Y14.5.
• Develop lists of material (LOM) and interpret Government Furnished Information (GFI).
• Mentor and supervise Drafter I/Designer colleagues as needed.
• Communicate effectively with customers and project stakeholders.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• High school diploma/GED with Technical School CAD Certificate, or A.S./B.S. in Drafting, CAD Design, or Engineering discipline.
• 3-4 years of experience with 2D and 3D CAD drafting (AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, or SOLIDWORKS).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and Adobe PDF tools.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Clearance.
• Physically able to conduct ship checks, including climbing ladders and working in confined spaces.
• Strong communication and mentorship skills.
