Growth

Takeda is an established enterprise that operates globally due to its status as a multinational Japanese company specializing in biopharmaceuticals. The company is experiencing a financial contraction after a decrease in its profit margins in the 2023 fiscal year. The concurrent forecast predicts a continued profit decrease due to the expiration of patent protections and the subsequent generic competition, mainly for its ADHD medicine Vyvanse.

Achievements

For the 2023 fiscal year, Takeda reported a modest rise in annual revenue, reaching a total of $27 billion, a 1.5% increase compared to its 2023 fiscal year revenue of $25.8 billion. This growth notwithstanding, net profit for the year dropped to $925 million, a 57% decrease from about $2 billion during the 2023 fiscal year. The operating profit also fell by 50.3%, from $3.15 billion to $1.37 billion in the fiscal year 2023.

Case Studies

Two case studies make a significant mark in Takeda's recent history. Firstly, the company's Crohn's disease stem cell therapy Alofisel did not pass its Phase III ADMIRE-CD II study, rendering it unable to improve 24-week combined remission in patients with complex Crohn's perianal fistulas significantly. As a result, Takeda decided against filing for regulatory approval in the U.S. Secondly, Takeda withdrew Exkivitiy globally after it failed the confirmatory Phase III EXCLAIM-2 study. The upcoming pipeline lineup that Takeda anticipates to compensate for Vyvanse's expiring exclusivity includes launching a Phase III trial of tyrosine kinase 2 inhibitor zasocitinib in psoriatic arthritis patients and a head-to-head study with BMS’s Sotyktu in psoriasis patients.

Key Events

One of Takeda's strategies to mitigate its losses due to Vyvanse's lack of exclusivity is the implementation of an 'enterprise-wide efficiency program' from 2024, which is projected to cost nearly $900 million. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to optimize the company's operations and promote financially efficient tactics.
